Notes:
Silver Dollars first appeared in America in 1794.  Today, the purchasing power of one
dollar is relatively small but, in 1799, a Silver Dollar represented a significant amount of
money.  For instance, a skilled laborer at the time earned one dollar per hour.  Even so,
the general public rarely saw Silver Dollars, because they were used mostly for private or large transactions.  Fortunately, the 1799 Silver Dollar has the highest mintage of any
Silver Dollar struck before 1860, so the public then (and collectors today) were more likely to see a 1799 Silver Dollar than any other date!
