From Superior
Galleries' "Pre-Long Beach Sale", June 5-7, 2000, Lot 1587,
where it was described as follows:
"1798 Draped Bust Small
Eagle 13 Stars Bolender-1 AU50. Dipped recently, but already has
begun to tone. Unlike 1796 and 1797 Small Eagle dollars, the 1798
tends towards a fuller strike. As seen here, the hair and drapery is
quite bold, while the eagle is so complete that it shows the eye and
nasal opening as well as excellent breast feathers. Luster plainly
visible on both sides.
Little is known about the two Small Eagle varieties dated 1798. It
is unknown if they represent the initial deliveries of this year or
an emergency group struck in the winter of 1798-99 following hasty
reopening of the Mint after the cold weather had killed off the
mosquitoes and stopped the epidemic of yellow fever. That with 13
stars has the cracked Large Letter reverse left over from 1797; the
rarer one with 15 stars -- see next lot -- has the worn-out reverse
of 1795. There is no way to know if both varieties were struck in
the same month, or which came first. Evidence from the condition of
reverse dies indicates only that both followed their 1796-97 usage." Price
Realized = $7,762.50
