From Superior
Galleries' "Pre-Long Beach Sale", June 5-7, 2000, Lot 1584,
where it was described as follows:
"1797 Draped Bust Small
Eagle Stars 9 + 7 Bolender-1 XF45. Old-time gray and multihued
patina on either side, deepest at the outer margin, lighter towards
the centers. A tiny rim mark at star 5; otherwise, the rims are
superb as is the entire surface, save for a slightly irregular area
at the neck. A pleasing coin for the grade, even has a little luster
around the devices on reverse.
In 1797, the number of stars was increased to sixteen. The coinage
was the smallest of any years from 1795 to 1803, only 7,776 pieces
having been struck. Only two obverse dies and three reverse dies
were required for this small coinage. Bolender puts the obverse with
9 stars on the left, 7 on the right as the first variety struck.
Later die states of B-1 show pronounced cracks." Price
Realized = $3,220.00
