PCGS MS-60. Ex -
Superior Galleries' "Pre-Long Beach Sale" May 27-29, 2001,
Lot 3605, where it was described as follows: "1872CC PCGS
graded Mint State 60. Brilliant with a hint of cloudy pearl gray and
champagne toning; fields are prooflike. A high condition offering,
sharply struck including all the stars, of remarkable quality
overall. One of the finest one could ever hope to own. An utterly
gorgeous and memorable specimen of this prized Carson City Mint
issue. In terms of absolute rarity among Carson City issues
the 1872-CC is outranked by the 1871-CC and 1873-CC, it is still an
important date at any grade level. In Mint condition it is a
formidable rarity with few equivalents, even in the finest
specialized collections. The most recent population statistics bear
this out: only 4 have been certified as Mint State 60 by the two
main graders, with 11 higher as of April 2001. (Coin housed in PCGS
holder #7436604)"
