NGC MS-61. Ex
– American Numismatic Rarities, LLC’s “The Classics Sale,” July
25, 2003
, Lot
655, illustrated,
sold for $12,650.00. The present specimen exhibits what Douglas
Winter calls "die rust," here appearing as planchet
irregularities. These irregularities may have been from rusted dies,
as Winter suggested or perhaps from detritus clinging to the working
dies. Either way, these planchet "flaws" are typical for
this date.
