Notes:
Dealer Brian Hendelson purchased an eight-piece Proof set from a
non-collector whose family had owned the coins for at least three
generations. The coins were certified by the Numismatic Guaranty
Corporation (NGC) as follows:
Half Cent (Breen 1576) - Proof-66
Brown
Large Cent (Breen 1863) - Proof-65 Brown
Half Dime (Breen 3002) - Proof-64
Dime - Proof-62
Quarter Dollar - Proof-63
Half Dollar - Proof-64
Quarter Eagle - Proof-66 Cameo
Half Eagle - Proof-65 Cameo
The set also included an 1836 Mint
Medal (Julian MT-21) encapsulated, but not graded, by NGC.
Sometime before August 2000, the set
was brokered by Pelco Coin Galleries of Columbus, Ohio to an anonymous
Ohio collector for a reported $1,000,000.
The set re-appeared at auction on July
31, 2000 (Lot 580 in "The Rarities Sale" conducted by Bowers
and Merena Galleries), selling for $345,000.00
