"Silly" Head.  This reverse die also appears on 1839 Newcomb 1 and 1839 Newcomb 4.

MS-63.  Ex - Stack's "The Marvin Taichert Collection of U.S. Type Coins", May 9, 2001, Lot 59, plated, sold for $1,955.00  Ex Boys Town Sale (Bowers and Merena, March 5, 1998, lot 291)

NGC graded MS-65 Brown and Del Bland graded MS-60.  Ex - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc.'s "Benson Collection, Part I", February 16, 18-20, 2001, lot 528, illustrated, where it was described as follows: "Silly head. Newcomb-9, Rarity-1… Del Bland graded MS-60 despite two tiny nicks, one below 9 and one midway between the date and star thirteen. Attractive medium chocolate brown with traces of mint red around many reverse devices. A common coin but very nice.", sold for $529.00
