1809 LARGE CENT -
SHELDON 280
Rarity: Common
Variety Equivalents: Breen 1775,
Breen 1
Notes:
The 9 of the date was punched over another 9 that had been placed
too low on the die. Breen called this "1809 over smaller
9", implying that the original 9 may have been from another
denomination punch.
This was the only use of the obverse and reverse dies.

it was described as follows: "1809 S-280 R2 AU58+ Lustrous bluish steel
brown and chocolate with a few tiny spots of darker olive toning on
the reverse. Would rate a full mint state grade except for a small,
light scuff on the cheek and another on the bust tip. LDS. A
beautiful example with the surfaces and luster of a choice mint
state cent. The toughest date in the Turban Head series to find in
high grade."
