ICG AU-58. Ex - Bowers
& Merena Galleries' "The Lake Geneva Sale", June 28-29,
2001, Lot 382, "Overdate", not illustrated, sold for $1,380.00
Notes:
The Large 8 on the 1818 Overton
101 was the only use of that punch since 1815 (all of the 1817 dated Half
Dollars feature a Small 8 and the Large 8's used from
1820 on are of a completely different shape and style).
Interestingly enough, the 8 punch used to create the overdate was the
Small 8 punch used on all of the other half dollar varieties of 1818,
raising the possibility that the Large 8 punch no longer existed in 1818
and that the 1817 die had actually been prepared as early as 1815!
The finest "1818/7 Large 8" example graded by PCGS is a single
MS-65.
