1802 HALF CENT - COHEN 1
PCGS No: 1054
Rarity: Very
Rare
Variety Equivalents: Breen 1,
Breen 1532, Gilbert 2
Notes:
All examples of this variety are overdates created when a small 2
was punched over the final 0 of a previously unused 1800 die. It
is believed that all 1802 Half Cents were struck on defective Large
Cents that were rolled-out and then cut down to the appropriate size.
The obverse die of this variety was also used on:
1802
Cohen 2
The reverse die of this
variety was also used earlier on:
1800
Cohen 1
The finest Brown "1800 Rev." example graded by PCGS is a
single EF-40BN.

Galleries "Pre-Long Beach Sale", June 3-4, 2002, Lot 2281,
where it was described as follows: "The obverse is F15 while the
reverse is slightly weaker, a result of the worn-out reverse die.
The surfaces are very nice and the only notable marks are a half dozen
tiny rim nicks on both sides, strongest ones at ED and the second T in
STATES. Rather glossy chocolate and steel brown. Struck over
a spoiled large cent planchet with undertype dentils at the bust
tip. The opposing area at OF AM is weak and shows some undertype
from the cent strike. The obverse is plated in the Breen book (a
different reverse is pictured in Breen). Third finest known of
this very rare variety. LDS, Manley state 2.0. The reverse
is in perfect head-to-foot orientation. Weight 82.4 grains."
