About Good-3. Ex - Superior Galleries' "Pre-Long Beach Sale",
October 1-3, 2000, Lot 1063, illustrated, sold for $977.50, where it was described as follows: "A
few points sharper but the planchet is lightly corroded. The only marks
are a small rim bump right of the neck and another at the T in UNITED.
Dark olive brown protected areas with lighter chocolate brown highpoints.
The date and legends are all readable, although HALF is weak due to minor
swelling in that area. The planchet weighs 84.8 grains, typical of the
lightweight planchets used on the plain edge half cents and well below the
lettered edge standard of 104 grains. The edge lettering (large edge
letter style) is readable on this example, but many of the letters hang
off the planchet at the top and bottom due to its thinness. An extremely
rare sub-variety seldom found in advanced collections. Breen reported a
single example known to him, which was later sold as lot #42 in the Roger
Cohen sale (same die state as this piece). I know of no others, but allow
that a few probably exist. An important opportunity for the
specialist."
