Notes:
The discovery of this edge lettering variety has traditionally been
credited to Commodore W.C. Eaton (1921), but this variety may have been
discovered as early as 1869 by Dr. Edward Maris.
Recent appearances:
Net VG-8. Ex - James G. Macallister, June 7, 1944, sold for $5.00 - Ira
& Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc.'s "The Benson
Collection - Part I", February 16, 18-20, 2001, Lot 159, illustrated,
sold for $2,415.00 where it was
described (in part) as follows: "1794. Small edge letters. Cohen-1b,
Breen-1b, Rarity-6. Del Bland graded VG-8. Sharpness of F-15 but uniformly
and finely porous with a couple nicks on the face and a small dig at D in
UNITED. All details are legible except the 7 in the date, which is weak.
Dark steel brown with tan high points. One of the better examples of this
very rare sub-variety with small edge letters and a Condition Census
piece."
