Notes:
The discovery of vast quantities
of gold in California prompted the issuance of a new American coin in 1849
- the Gold Dollar. Each of the four U.S. Mints in operation at the
time (Philadelphia, New Orleans, Dahlonega and Charlotte) produced Gold
Dollars, with Philadelphia contributing 688,567 coins to the
total.
The finest Uncirculated "Open Wreath" example graded by PCGS
is a single MS-69.
The finest Uncirculated "Closed Wreath" examples graded by PCGS
are 4 MS-66's.
The finest Uncirculated "No L" example graded by PCGS is a
single MS-67.
