Notes:
The
1883 Double Eagle is an extremely rare Proof-only date with a mintage of a
mere 92 coins. This makes it
almost as rare as the other two Proof-only dates: 1884 and 1887 (both of
which are offered elsewhere in this sale).
Today, an estimated 15-20 examples exist.
PCGS has certified only five examples: 3 in PR-64, 1 in PR-65, and
1 in PR-65 Deep Cameo. NGC
shows 15 examples: 2 in PR-62 Cameo, 10 in PR-64 Cameo, 3 in PR-65 Cameo,
1 in PR-64 Ultra Cameo, and 1 in PR-65 Ultra Cameo. (We don’t believe
the figure of 10 PR-64 Cameos for a second, suspecting that a large number
of resubmissions account for the elevated number).
A
new “high-water” price record for this date was achieved in January 2004,
when the PCGS PR-65 Deep Cameo sold for $172,500!
Since
1994, collectors have had very few opportunities (approximately once a year)
to purchase this elusive date.
The finest Proof example graded by PCGS is a single PR-65.
The finest Proof Deep
Cameo example graded by PCGS is a single PRDC-65.
Significant examples:
Proof (illustrated above).
