"Similar to 1896 except, of
course, the 1897-S is not as rare as the 1896-S.
1897-S is also highly regarded because of its very low
mintage. This coin comes with a sharper strike than the 1897-O, which may
account for the three MS 67 and one MS 68 graded [as of 1999]. We know of
several 1897-S quarters that have dark, unattractive toning. Nice specimens
do not last long."1
The finest Uncirculated example graded by
PCGS is a single MS-67.
